Producing EPA powered by Icelandic nature.

The many benefits of Iceland are brought together in our high-tech production facility. Renewable energy and an abundance of pure Icelandic water form the basis of our premium algae products.

Growing facility.

Project Iceland houses Algae Growth’s first large-scale production facility in the Icelandic municipality of Reykjanesbær. Complete with a state-of-the-art production facility and a modern main building with laboratories and all necessary employee facilities. The greenhouse contains our proprietary production system with closed tube-shaped glass photobioreactors (PBRs). The climate-control system is designed to combine natural daylight with artificial lighting in order to make optimal use of the available light. The two-hectare production facility is set up for future upscaling to a size of twelve hectares in total.

Production process.

The microalgae are cultivated in salt water from our own natural water sources in Iceland, enriched with essential nutrients to ensure optimal growth. CO₂ is converted into oxygen and released back into nature. The water circulates in a closed system, which guarantees a reuse percentage of over 90%. Advanced climate-control systems provide complete control and optimal growing conditions 24/7. This guarantees the consistent high quality of the cultivated microalgae. By using natural sunlight in combination with artificial lighting, we can produce products such as algae powder, EPA oil and protein powder year round.

Iceland offers an abundance of renewable energy sources, mainly in the form of geothermal and hydroelectric power plants. The country is a forerunner in environmentally friendly and sustainable initiatives and all of its electricity is generated from renewable energy sources. This makes Iceland a leader in renewable energy solutions.
In the unspoiled natural landscape of Iceland, our algae production facility has access to some of the purest and uncontaminated water sources in the world. This clean salt water allows us to produce high-quality algae products with an exceptionally low ecological footprint.
Iceland’s location at the strategic intersection between Europe and North America offers unique logistical benefits. With access to major markets and efficient transport connections, our facility in Iceland has a competitive advantage in the global supply of high-quality algae products.

Iceland’s mild, cooler climate is ideal for algae farming, as it helps prevent overheating. In addition, the country offers an abundance of geothermal energy, which provides constant temperature control in nurseries. These factors promote efficient and sustainable algae cultivation.

Pure Icelandic quality.

We wish Algae Growth Iceland a warm welcome to Iceland and our municipality Reykjanesbær. This company will not only contribute to the region’s economic growth, but also demonstrates that we as a community are paving the way in terms of sustainability. I am overjoyed to see how this company will strengthen our local community and we look forward to a successful collaboration.

FAQ.

As a location for our first production facility, Iceland offers several benefits. For example, the use of renewable energy is guaranteed, there is abundant access to clean water sources and the country is ideally situated between our main markets in Europe and North America.

The production facility in Iceland is located in the municipality of Reykjanesbær in the south-west of Iceland. The region’s seismic activity has been carefully studied. The risk of a volcanic eruption or major earthquake in the municipality of Reykjanesbær is deemed to be extremely small. The area’s higher elevation compared to the surrounding area also minimizes the risk of lava flows into the area. For this reason, the international Keflavik airport is also located in this region.

By mainly working with local employees, contractors, suppliers and other partners, we contribute to the development of the local employment market. Additionally, we work together with local universities and research institutes to increase knowledge about the relationship between algae, health and sustainability and share this knowledge with the local population.

During the growth process, the algae absorb CO₂ and convert it into oxygen. This means algae production has a positive environmental impact. Furthermore, sustainability is the most important consideration in our choice of materials and resources.

The greenhouse is equipped with a blackout system, which prevents the emission of artificial light from our facility during dark hours. This system reduces light emission by 99%.

Nannochloropsis gaditana is a species of microalgae that is part of the Nannochloropsis family. This salt-water microalgae is characterized by its high EPA content.
